Introduction
The Breakout board is designed to separate all connections of the Builder Brain so individual components and BYOB boards can be directly connected. While the Breakout board is designed for easy connection with the BYOB series of boards (Push, Turn, Slide), it can also be used to connect and manage standalone components and third-party circuit boards. The Breakout board has three main sections: button connections, [LED connections], and analog connections (for inputs such as knobs and sliders). The Builder Brain board has dual-row ribbon connections that are attached to the Breakout board. The breakout board then spreads out those connections and provides a place for other components of the individual input circuits. All BYO boards are designed with 0.1" (2.54mm) spacing. The 0.1" pin spacing on the Breakout board gives the user the option to use 0.1 spaced terminal blocks or direct solder wire connections. The Breakout board is v-scored for each section so that the board can be re-sized for use by breaking apart the individual sections. The Builder system supports the ability to use [backlight LEDs] around sliders and knobs. For this, the breakout board has a place for DC power input with either a Positive/Negative Pin pair for direct wire soldering or a place for a DC Jack. This is the mouser part for the DC jack that works with the board. This is a good power supply that works with the DC jack.
A. Button Matrix Section
- Connect up to 64 momentary switches to the Brain and the Push boards.
B. LED Matrix Section
- Connect up to 48 LEDs and resistors to the Brain and the Turn boards.
C. Analog Section
- Used to connect 64 analog controls i.e. potentiometers to the brain and can be used with the Turn and Slide boards.
The Button section
The button section of the breakout board is used to connect the buttons or contacts to the Brain. This section can be used with the Push boards or other digital contacts.
A. Button Matrix Pin Header
- This section is used to connect the Button section to the Button Header Matrix JP1 pin header on the brain. A 16 pin header should be soldered to the board here. When connecting a ribbon cable make sure the red cable (pin 1) lines up to the arrow.
B. Button Matrix Rows and Columns
- Use this section for a simple matrix connection with rows and columns. When using the Push boards you will want to connect the BC and BR connections of each board to these connections. Connections can be made by soldering wires directly to these pins or by soldering 0.1" spaced terminal blocks can also be soldered to this area for easy connections.
C. Resistors Connections
- Eight pulldown resistors should be used to reduce noise from the button matrix. We suggest 33k ohm resistors. This section provides space for both thru hole or 1206 surface mount resistors. You only need to use one or the other.
D. External Pin Header
- This section is used to connect the Button section to the External JP2 pin header on the Brain. A 14 pin header should be soldered to the board here. When connecting a ribbon cable make sure the red cable (pin 1) lines up to the arrow.
LED Matrix section
The LED section of the breakout board is used to connect up to 48 [indicator LEDs] to the Brain. This can be used in conjunction with the Push boards or other LED connections. This board also contains an optional circuit for [backlight LEDs].
A. LED Matrix Pin Headers
- This section is used to connect the LEDs to the LED Matrix JP2 pin header on the brain. A 14 pin header should be soldered to the board here. When connecting a ribbon cable make sure the red cable (pin 1) lines up to the arrow. A 14 pin header should be soldered to the board here. When connecting a ribbon cable make sure the red cable (pin 1) lines up to the arrow
B. LED Matrix Rows and Columns
- Use this section for a simple matrix connection with six rows and eight columns. When using the Push boards you will want to connect the LR and LC connections of each board to these connections. Connections can be made by soldering wires directly to these pins or by soldering 0.1" spaced terminal blocks can also be soldered to this area for easy connections.
C. Resistor Connections
- Resistors are required with all LED connections to control voltage. This section provides seven spaces for both thru hole or 1206 surface mount resistors. You only need to use one or the other. Resistor values will depend on the color of the LED you are using. To find the value resistor needed you can use this resistor calculator http://led.linear1.org/1led.wiz .
The Resistors are on the Column Side of the circuit on this PCB, so you want to make sure that all of LEDs of the same Color are in the same Column.
Note: Do not populate R30 as it was include for a hardware configuration that is not configureable. Instead you should populate R30 with a 0-ohm Resistor or solder the pads together with a piece of wire or LED Column1 Will not Function.
D. 12V DC Connection
- The BYOB boards support [backlight LEDs]. This LED circuit on the boards require a power jack and are not powered by the Brain. This is a simple direct wire LED circuit. The through hole pattern provides a place for a common through hole DC power jack. The power and ground is then populated across the board with jumpers. You can either solder power connections to the POS and NEG holes under the 12v lable, or solder in a jack like this.
E. 12V Jumpers
- This pair of pin holes are directly connected to the power jack and used to populate the power and ground to other break off sections of the Breakout board by the use of jumpers.
Analog Section
The analog section of the breakout board is used to connect the analog connections to the Brain. This can be used in conjunction with the Slide and turn boards, or with other analog connections.
A. Analog Connections
- This section is used to connect the eight individual (CC) analog controls such as potentiometers. Each line provides a single potentiometer connection and is labeled JP1,JP2,JP3,POS,NEG. JP1 is ground JP2 is voltage and JP3 is for the wiper (signal). JP1 and JP2 are common for all eight connections on this board. A power circuit for powering the back light LEDs of each BYOB Slide or Turn boards. Connections can be made by soldering wires directly to these pins or by soldering 0.1" spaced terminal blocks can also be soldered to this area for easy connections.
B. Analog Pin Header
- This section is used to connect the analog section to the Analog JP7-JP14 pin headers on the Brain. A 10 pin header should be soldered to the board here. When connecting a ribbon cable make sure the red cable (pin 1) lines up to the arrow.
C. 12v Jumpers
- Two pairs of POS/NEG pin holes allow you to use jumpers to connect to the 12v connection on the Indicator LEDs board or other slide boards.
Backlight Circuit
The backlight circuit is a string of LEDs with a resistor to control voltage. The backlight LEDs are intended to be constant on or off not controlled by the builder brain and require a 12 volt power source. The Brain is not required at all to use this circuit.
Indicator LED Circuit
Indicator LEDs are LEDs that can be turned on and off by the Brain by sending MIDI or sysex messages. Indicator LEDs are driven by USB power and do not need an external power supply. Indicator LEDs are driven from the Brain and can also be found on the Push boards. Do not confuse the backlight LEDs with the Indicator LEDs. The backlight LEDs are not part of the Brain, only the BYOB boards and only provide 12v dc backlighting.

If you are using enough ribbons we suggest just buying a 100 ft roll of 16 and stripping them to size.
